MY LIFE: Adam Oshiomhole

Congratulations on your 61st birthday, comrade governor. Looking back, how has the journey been for you? Do you feel anything different?
Of course, the body can’t be the same. However, talking seriously, I think my life has been one of a miracle. It is in the sense that, looking back at my little village, Iyamho, where I was born, the very humble condition of my parents, all I had then, my dream in life, I mean everything has been miraculous. First, leaving the village for Kaduna, not knowing anybody there but just believing that if I get there I have a job, naivety, the innocence and of course, getting there to find out that life was not as exactly as I had assumed. In that condition, I had to sleep in a police station for three nights!

REDUPLICATING SILICON VALLEY IN EDO STATE

Suggested by: IMORU, Austin

DEFINITION
The world today is on electronic speed train faster than any technology or development any century has ever witnessed. The 21st century is not just a global village any more, it is an information age. Information currently is the foundation on which global economy is built. Here in Edo State, we can maximise our ancient heritage and build huge trade out of it.

With this common sense idea, we can create the necessary, much needed jobs with our readily available means. If we dwell on the strength of what we have, we can build upon it and create what we need. Let’s access what we have in this State and then examine what we need. We will surely realise that we have more than we need.

BETTER AND CHEAPER HOUSING FACILITIES FOR ALL IN EDO STATE

Submitted by: IMORU, Austin

DEFINITION
It is a simple detailed idea that can help make housing facilities affordable by all citizens of the State. It is possible for all citizens of Edo State to have affordable decent shelters if certain policies are formulated and enforced in the State. The Government of Edo State can enact policies that will help alleviate the anguish of the Citizens of the State by ensuring that the housing facilities are affordable and commensurate with the present minimum wage.

This can be done without any financial bail-out on the side of the Government. A simple as well as a single policy can help provide affordable housing facilities and at the end of the day alleviate poverty in the State. This proposal is to help the Government see what they can possibly do to help the situation of housing facilities in the State. A policy statement which is vigorously enforced by the same can go a long way in solving one of the biggest challenges of basic social amenities in any city.

A word for Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia

I still do not understand why Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia is getting himself involved with these dirty politicians. Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia era will always be the reference mark in any State in Nigeria. I was in primary school those days when he was the Governor of the Old Bendel State. After years in US, I still cherries his achievement in the old Bendel State. He was exemplary leader. Please Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia maintain your dignity and stay away from these useless politician.

Edo State Budget 2009

Adams Oshiomhole, Edo State governor, Monday, presented a budget of N75.54 billion to the state House of Assembly for approval.Presenting the budget, christened “budget of new beginning”, the governor said it would kick-start the integrated, accelerated, sustainable and people driven development in the state.

He said the vision of the budget was to transform the state qualitatively through empowerment of the people with the resources; infrastructure, institutions and all-inclusive policies to enable the people live more productive and secure lives.

Oshiomhole, who stated that the state like the rest of the states in the country was confronted with a drastic decline in revenue arising largely from the persistent fall in allocations from the federation accounts, noted that the situation was even made worse by the meager internally generated revenue of an average of N350 million. He said in spite of the misfortune of the past governments, the challenges of his administration was to provide a more imaginative and purposeful leadership, to re-order his priorities, eliminate wastages and manage available scarce resources prudently, in order to meet the high expectations of the people by looking inwards to tap available sources of revenue and block all leakages.

Edo People

Historical accounts are vague as to when and if the Bini (Edo), migrated from the Nile valley. What is not in doubt is that the earliest rulers of Benin were called Ogisos.

Thirty-one Ogisos in all ruled the kingdom of Benin between 900 - 1200 AD, which is the earliest period so far accounted for in Benin history.

The Bini monarchy demonstrates strong affinity with ancient Egyptian gods and Pharaohs, with which it shares identical authority, grandeur and a great deal of reverence from their subjects.

In fact, the hair style of Bini chiefs is similar to Pharaoh Ramses II's famous helmet, while the small circles on the helmet appear also on many Bini bronzes. Bini Queens wear identical hairstyles to that of Pharaoh Mycerinus (Fourth-Dynasty), and Pharaoh Sesostris I (Twelfth Dynasty). The kings (Ogies) of Benin (Bini) also adopt grand Osirian titles of the 'Open Eye,' signifying omniscience and omnipotence.
